Serenity lodge nelson nz1/27/2024 I would say this area is beautiful but doesn't seem terribly developed. We parked for a little bit looking out but the with the way they were swarming, we didn't even want to get out. We were there near the end of February but the sandflies were horrible by Lake Rotoroa, by the campground. If we weren't needing to move on we would have stayed longer and climbed Mt Robert, next time. This is our second time back in the area and it won't be our last. But it was calm again for our happy hour by the lake side in the evening. Not so coming back with a good strong headwind to contend with. It was picture perfect when we left the shore to paddle to the other end. The lake and scenery is so beautiful and special at the different times of day. We had our very own 'camp host' a little robin visit us. The campsites are set in cubby holes by the bush. Then the toilets are all modern and even a system for pulling up your own solar shower, otherwise take a cold one. Lovely dining area (bring your own cooker) but benches and table & chairs if you need to get out of the weather. We ended up at West bay campsite, which was actually ideal for us, just a short walk to the water with our kayaks. School holidays though so should have known better. We nearly missed out staying here, not expecting it to be busy late April at all. And all of us got quite a number of bites! What a spoilsport- terrible sandflies!! We had to cut short the time here & ran off quickly. Perhaps its the timing- we were here around dusk- which I believe is when sandflies are most active. We had anti insect patches but did not put it on earlier - too late. We did not expect it as so far all the lakes we have been to don't have sandflies or just occasional ones. Shortly after we got out of car, we were attacked by swarms of sandflies. However, we had an unexpected add-ons -SANDFLIES! And even few seagulls roaming around the shore area. This lake has many nice Mandarin Ducks, Black Swans, even Black Fishes ( looks like Catfishes) - all happily swimming near the shore. Amidst the backdrop of majestic mountains enveloped by foggy clouds, it's just crazily beautiful.Īnd the small unrailed wooden jetty jutting out towards the mountains adds to the serene atmosphere.īut what makes this lake very different from the other just as stunning lakes are the "natural add-ons." Definitely recommended. No doubt this is a very stunningly beautiful lake. We went into town for dinner, but there is pub located right next door that servs food and you can bill back to your room if you wanted to. Any noise from the rucks coming and going from the industrial area across the road was unable to be heard in our room. No staff in the breakfast room, but directions and food well presented so you could help yourself. A continental breakfast was included which was quite a good spread and well presented. Car parking on site, even if a little cramped, but was still OK. Rooms were quite spacious and well presented. Google maps will provide an example of the view and if you don’t like it, don’t stay. The view overlooking the harbour has been criticized in other reviews, but we found it to a pleasant outlook with interesting vessels and goings on happening most of the time. Located at the edge of the recreational vessel harbour it is a little out of town and in what appears to be an industrial area.
